Target Group Education
Target Group Education (TGE) component is one of the major aspects of the CGBV project. It is out of question that the awareness raising trainings constitute one of the most crucial instruments for increasing the target population’s knowledge and skills on any particular issue at stake as well as support behaviour changes. Conduction of trainings is absolutely central to any initiative directed at tackling the issues of gender inequality in a given society. Being guided by such an imperative the TGE component of the CGBV project consists of the following major elements:
Development of the Training Manual
ToT Manual provides guidance and training materials for two types of training programs: 5-day Training of Trainers and 2 day Target Group Training. The goal of the Manual is to provide the trainers, educators and members of selected group with the flexible and comprehensive tool for raising awareness of GBV issues in the country and combating the attitudes and stereotypes legitimizing GBV. The problem of GBV is examined within the framework of human rights and placed in the context of Human Rights Education. The Manual consists of the introductory part that provides the general overview of the situation with combating GBV in Azerbaijan (statistics, legislative base, international commitments, institutional support), gives definitions of the main theoretical concepts used in the Manual, introduces the reader to the goals and objectives of each training program, methodological section that describes the overall methodology of the training and provides targeted recommendations on working with each of selected population groups, various other sections that present information on the international experience for combating GBV. This section is supplemented by 4 DVDs with “Women on the Frontline” documentaries in Azerbaijani for demonstration and discussion. A separate section is dealing with the GBV related issues in Azerbaijan Republic; this section is supplemented by DVD with “Life betrayed”, the documentary on Domestic Violence and Trafficking in Azerbaijan. The Evaluation methods, sample training evaluation framework is also enshrined in the Manual.
Training of Educators
It is expected to prepare a pool of gender trainers in Azerbaijan via this project component. To achieve this, it is planned to hold 5 days training sessions and train 210 people during overall period of 3 years project cycle in Azerbaijan. Currently 150 persons have already attended the trainings.
Training for target groups
Youth (high school and university students), as well as male and female teachers will be trained in separate groups by the educators and will be educated on general basic gender issues, gender sensitivity, discrimination and GBV and male involvement through 2 days meetings. Youth, women and men will be educated based on participatory methods and extensive use of drama and forum play.
Victim Information Meetings
Series of victim information meetings as well as support groups for the victims of GBV are planned to be held. Being guided by the lack of effective referral mechanisms for the victims of GBV the project has already initiated this activity in close cooperation with a local women’s NGO “Women Crisis Center” as of the first project year and is currently continuing its activities in this direction. This project component includes the following: to provide the individuals exposed to gender based domestic violence and/or other types of gender based abuse with a set of informational and practical tools necessary to strengthen the victims’ ability to successfully resist harmful practices; to develop a basic understanding of gender-based violence, its characteristics, causes and consequences and strategic impact on women, men, children; to assist GBV victims in the process of overcoming isolation by providing them with safe and supportive environment for sharing experience, defying stereotypes and confronting fears; to contribute to rehabilitation of GBV victims through group therapy sessions conducted by professional psychologist; to empower GBV victims through raising their awareness in basic legal education.
