Combating Gender Based Violence project (CGBV) implemented under the auspices of the UNFPA/Azerbaijan Program represents one of the pilot efforts aimed at creating an enabling environment for reducing gender based violence (GBV) in the country in order to ensure effective protection and promotion of women’s rights and fundamental freedoms as well as foster gender equality and women’s participation in decision making processes. The program aims at promoting understanding and respect for women’s rights in Azerbaijan through series of interrelated activities aiming at achieving gender equality via gender sensitive initiatives undertaken in the field of policy and legislation, awareness raising, advocacy as well as research.

The media role in forming opinions on gender issues and women’s rights as well as in the process of elimination of related gender stereotypes and misconceptions in the society is indispensable. However, it is with regret that the majority of communication products are developed by the journalists that predominantly seek to present the sensations instead of focusing on the language that could have served preventative and educational objectives in this respect. Therefore, the evaluation of the ways on how media addresses cases of GBV can provide valuable information on the types of messages the society receives about such an important issue.

The challenge in addressing the domestic violence in the country is closely linked to the strong foundations of patriarchal family structure that set down the hierarchy of power relations among family members, in certain cases allow for the use of force as a mechanism of subordination as well as strictly protect the family interactions from any outside intervention. Media is one of the most important vehicles capable of increasing public awareness on any specific issue including the protection and promotion of women’s rights, gender based violence and other related sensitive matters via delivering clear messages to the target audience. UNFPA’s Combating Gender Based Violence in Azerbaijan Project has launched the conduction of information sessions on gender based violence (GBV) in the frame of the project’s public awareness activities. Several target groups (13-year old young girls, 18-28 year old young boys and teachers) are expected to be educated on common gender issues, gender sensitivity, gender based discrimination and GBV through the sessions to be held during three months period.
